Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) was established in 2011 as a private company limited by guarantee. The Institute is Zambia’s first indigenous policy research institute dedicated to policy analysis of the agricultural and natural resources sectors. IAPRI is governed by a Board of Directors representing relevant stakeholders in the agricultural industry. Over the years, IAPRI’s principal mandate has been to provide evidence based and transformative solutions through applied research, capacity building and outreach services for sustainable economic development in Zambia. IAPRI wishes to recruit a highly competent Zambian national with extensive experience working on agricultural and/or natural resource policy issues for the position of Executive Director.

Position Objective

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management of IAPRI as well as providing oversight of research, finance and administration team members in line with the Institute’s mission and vision. In the execution of his/her duties, the Executive Director will report to IAPRI’s Board of Directors composed of strategic public, private, and civil society stakeholders in the agriculture and natural resources sectors. The Executive Director will also be responsible for establishing strategic partnerships with relevant public and private sectors, civil society and cooperating partners.

Key Responsibilities.

  • Provide effective leadership to support IAPRI’s role as a Centre of Excellence for Agricultural Policy Research, Capacity Building and Outreach in Zambia.
  • Lead IAPRI’s fundraising efforts through identifying strategic opportunities for IAPRI’s development and sustainability.
  • Provide leadership in fostering support for policy guidance, action and implementation in close consultation with relevant public sector, private sector, academic and civil society organizations in Zambia.
  • Coordinate the preparation of the Institute’s work plans, budgets, progress reports and financial reports and ensure that the same are implemented in a timeous manner.
  • Coordinate IAPRI staff, technical assistance and local stakeholders involved in the implementation of the Institute’s activities, which include the preparation and dissemination of actionable policy-relevant research.
  • Provide quality control checks of the Institute’s research, outreach and capacity building activities.
  • Represent the Institute at external events as the main spokesperson and liaison with media, public and private sector actors, academia, civil society and cooperating partners.
  • Carry out any other additional responsibilities as deemed fit by the Board from time to time.

Qualifications/Required Competencies

Interested persons must possess a Master’s Degree Economics, Agriculture Business Management, Applied Economics, Policy Management, or related field. A Ph.D. will be an added advantage. A minimum of 10 years in managerial and leadership position. Applicants should have substantial familiarity and engagement with agricultural policy processes in Zambia and sub-Saharan Africa region and must possess excellent managerial, social and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to understand and interpret complex policy analysis. He or she should have experience in and/or knowledge in working with inter-disciplinary researchers; demonstrated ability to manage external relationships which includes government agencies, private sector, academia, civil society and donors. The applicant should be a member of the Agricultural Institute of Zambia or any reputable professional association.
